Vivarium (2007)
Video Installation 12'56"
HD Video transferred to DVD, surround sound
Variable size, cabinet 110 x 55 x 62 cm
The video installation Vivarium is the result of a three-month artist in residence at Artspace Visual Arts Centre in Sydney Australia. It consists of a video projector on a tripod projecting images on a projection screen that seems to float in the middle of a glass cabinet made of MDF and two glass panes.
The installation questions the relationship between the life in the city, the city itself and the surrounding landscape. It shows a young female botanist working in the tropical greenhouses in the heart of the city. The parallel between the closed-in condition of the greenhouse and the city being completely surrounded by impenetrable wilderness is an important element in this work.
